[www.inewsguyana.com] –A vendor who resides at the East La Penitence Night Shelter was given a two year suspended sentence by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for stealing a Cream Soda, Vita malt and Smalta from a Shell Gas station.

John Hercules, 39, pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on February 11 at Regent and King Street, Georgetown, he stole one bottle each of the items, together valued $680.

The suspended sentence means that he will not spend any time in jail unless he breaches the rules governing the sentence.

The unrepresented man told the Court that he was previously charged for littering; however Police Corporal Bharat Mangru informed the Court that Hercules was charged with simple larceny two years ago.

Mangru said on the day in question, Hercules went into the supermarket and consumed the articles mentioned in the charge. He then exited without paying for the items.

He was also ordered to repay the total amount for the items.
