Cook jailed for stealing underwear, other items from Georgetown house

handcuffs[www.inewsguyana.com] – A cook has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by Magistrate Ann McLennan for stealing underwear and other items.

Forty – year – old Mark Peters of Lot 40 DaSilva Street, Newtown, Kitty, Georgetown, who works as a cook in the interior, pleaded not guilty to the offense during his first court appearance on September 10.

However, on Wednesday, September 16, 2015, he changed his plea to guilty and admitted that on Monday, September 7, at Carmichael Street, Georgetown he broke and entered the dwelling house of the Virtual Complainant (VC), Susan Hailey and stole a hair blow dryer valued $20,000; a curling iron, valued $5000; a gas bottle valued $10,000 and a pair of women’s underwear valued $2000; an Avon Bath and Body set valued $16,000; six pieces of clothing valued $16,000; a pair of slippers valued $4,000; a wallet valued $1000; a pair of sunglasses valued $2,000 and a helmet valued at $3,000.

The court heard that after the victim discovered Peters in her house, she raised an alarm and he was quickly apprehended. He was then taken into Police custody.

  1. Citizens of Guyana are in a financial crisis (no jobs). On a daily basis there are reports of robbery or murder , but Venezuela is being target for having poor standards of living. What is the Guyana Gov. doing about this diabolical crisis in Guyana? Nothing, I guess, but blame the previous Gov.

    Armed robbers whom are UG student commit armed robbery of over $9M and received community service as their sentence.
    I hope the UN people they are now monitoring corruption in Guyana not turn a blind eye to this atrocity.
