Canadian citizen remanded on Drug Trafficking charge

[www.inewsguyana.com] – A 54 – year – old Canadian citizen, who also resides at Lot 42 Goed Banana Land, East Canje Berbice was today charged with the possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Struetikant Persaud appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan and pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on Friday, August 8 at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, East Bank Demerara, he had in his possession 7.148 Kilogrammes of cocaine, which was allegedly found in milk powder packets, custard powder and achar.

He was a passenger on an outgoing Caribbean Airlines flight.

Custom Anti narcotics unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Oswald Massiah did not disclose any facts to the Court, but stated that Persaud has two different addresses.

He was represented by Attorney – at – Law, Paul Fung – A – Fat, who noted that Persaud is a father of two and is employed as Painter. The Court heard that he was convicted in 2004 on a similar charge.

He was refused bail on the grounds that no special reason was given to the Court and will make his next Court appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on September 15.
