Businessman pleads guilty to 8 counts of fraud; Jailed for three years

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Gopaul Tiwarie of Craig, East Bank Demerara, was sentenced to serve three years imprisonment for the offences of fraudulent conversion and false pretense.

He was charged with eight counts of false pretense and one count of fraudulent conversion, to which he pleaded guilty before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The court heard that on May 31, the 46 – year – old businessman, with the intent to defraud, obtained from Christopher Daniels the sum of $200,000 by falsely pretending that he was in a position to sell one land cruiser 2010 LX.

The second charge said on May 31, he obtained from Rodwell Chillcott $4.6M by falsely pretending that he was in position to sell one excavator, while the third offence noted that between February 1 – 28, he obtained from Ryan Aldolphus $7M by falsely pretending that he was in position to sell a parcel of commercial land at Eccles Industrial Site.

The fourth charge stated that on March 7, he obtained from Basil Bhagwandin the sum of $400,000 by falsely pretending that he was in position to sell a motor car, while the fifth charge noted that on April 4, being solely entrusted with the sum of US$2,000 by Richard Austin, to buy windows and building materials, he fraudulently converted to his own use.

The sixth charge stated that on May 31, he obtained from Jagdatt Ramsaywack the sum of $100,000 to purchase 50 tyres and pretended that he was in position to sell a motor car.

The seventh offence noted that between May 21 and 23 he obtained from Maureen Gomes the sum of $400,000, by falsely pretending that he was in position to sell one minibus.

The eight charge said between January 1 and April 30, he obtained money from Ezel Prescott to sell a house lot at Eccles, East Bank Demerara..

The last charge stated that between January 1 and April 30, he obtained $2.5M from Oswin Adolphus to sell two house lots at Eccles and a Bedford Truck, by falsely pretending that he was in position to sell same.

He was represented by Attorney – at – Law, Paul Fung-A-Fat, who told the Court that his client is married with three children and has a sick mother and a brother suffering with cancer to take care of.
