Brazilian national allegedly caught with cocaine in Lethem remanded

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Brazilian national, Leymar Leite De Lima was remanded to prison on Thursday, March 26 by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a narcotics charge.

Through an interpreter, the defendant who resides at Lot 407 Tabitinga, Lethem Rupununi, denied that he had in his possession two and half grams of cocaine.

His lawyer, Jerome Khan told the Court that his client works with his relatives in Lethem and in Boa Vista, Brazil. Khan requested bail on the grounds that his client does not have any prior matters.

According to Khan, his client was heading to Brazil when he was stopped and the illicit drug was found. He brought to the court’s attention that De Lima did not know how to respond, since he cannot communicate freely.

According to Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, ranks were on patrol duty when they stopped the Brazilian national who was at that time riding a motorcycle. Subsequently, a search was carried out and the prohibited substance as found in his right side back pocket.

Bail was refused and the matter was transferred to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for June 01.
