Three years jail for man found with 171 grammes of Marijuana

[www.inewsguyana.com] – A 33 – year – old self-employed man of Independence Boulevard, Georgetown, was  sentenced to three years imprisonment together with $205,400 fine on a drug trafficking charge on Wednesday, April 16.

Jason ‘Jack’ Helligar appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan and pleaded guilty to the charge, particulars of which said on Monday, April 14 at Albouystown, Georgetown, he had in his possession 171 grammes of cannabis-sativa (marijuana) for the purpose for trafficking.

Police Prosecutor Dinero Jones told the Court that on the day in question, around 17:55 hrs, Police on patrol was proceeding south of Albouystown, when they observed the accused with a Bob Marley backpack.

He was stopped by the ranks and a searched was carried out on both his person and the bag, where a quantity of silver aluminum foil was found in a black plastic bag, containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be the illegal substance.

The unrepresented man told the Court that he committed the offence in order “to make ends meet”.
