[www.inewsguyana.com] – Alex Persaud appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and for having a utensil used for smoking cocaine.

The 38 – year – old man pleaded guilty to both charges which read that on October 28 at the Stabroek Market, Georgetown he had one gram of cocaine along with a utensil used for smoking the illegal substance.

According to police prosecutor Bharrat Mangru, on the day of the incident police were on patrol when they saw a group of men acting in a suspicious manner and then requested to conduct a search on each of the men during which the cocaine and utensil were found on Persaud’s possession.

When the Chief Magistrate asked the accused if he had anything to say about the matter he told the court that he recently came out of jail and had applied at a number of business entities for a job but was unable to gain employment. Without much deliberation the Chief Magistrate fined the accused $45,000 along with three years in jail for both offences. [Royan Abrams]
