Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT) Commander, Deputy Superintendent Lonsdale Withrite has been relieved of his duty, a release from the Guyana Police Force earlier today (Wednesday) has confirmed.
INews understands that this decision was made following a robbery attack on the Commander which resulted in him being relieved of his service weapon, sixteen live rounds of ammunition and his motorcar, while in the company of a female friend.
The Officer reported that the robbery occurred at around 22:00hrs on Monday in the vicinity of the Kitty Seawall.
Lonsdale was allegedly pounced on by three men, one of whom discharged two rounds at him before relieving him of the items and made good their escape.
However, moments after the robbery, the vehicle was found abandoned in the vicinity of Ogle Airstrip, East Coast Demerara (ECD) by members of the Police Force.
Investigations are currently on-going to bring the perpetrators involved in the robbery attack to justice.
