Police ranks charged with assault, simple larceny granted bail

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Two policemen charged with assault and simple larceny were placed on $50,000 bail each on Wednesday, July 15 by City Magistrate, Fabayo Azore.

The police constables, 24 – year – old Odwen Amsterdam and Darren Cameron, 25, of Lot 3007 Central Ameila’s Ward Linden pleaded not guilty to both charges, one of which alleged that on January 15, 2015 at Kingston Seawall, Georgetown, they assaulted Kurt Saulter, causing actual bodily harm.

The other charge alleged that on the same day at Kingston Seawall, they stole cash $25,000 and one Blackberry cellular phone, property of Saulter.IMG_20150715_155131

Police Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru did not object to bail. He told the court that on the day in question, the two ranks were on a motorcycle on patrol duty, when they confronted the victim and lashed him with a gun and a helmet.

Cameron was represented by Attorney-at-law, Peter Hugh, who told the court that his client is stationed at the McKenzie Police station and has no pending matter.

Bail was granted and the case was adjourned to July 30.
