[www.inewsguyana.com] – Orlando Lawrence, a miner of Lot 643 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, charged with robbery under arms was today (Friday, March 14) placed on $100,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Lawrence pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on March 12 at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, being armed with a knife he robbed Sherwin Clarke of $400.

Police Prosecutor Michael Grant informed the Court that both men are known to each other from prison and around 22: 45hrs on the day in question, the victim was at the Ferry Stelling, when the defendant came up to him with a knife. Lawrence placed the weapon to Clarke’s neck and took the money from his pocket.

Lawrence told the Court that today is his birthday and he works in the interior. He said on the day in question he gave Clarke the money to purchase something for him.  He added that the man left with his bicycle and after three hours he met him in Georgetown and he was unwilling to return the money.

He was granted bail on condition that he reports to the Brickdam Police Station every fortnight commencing March 28.

He told Chief Magistrate that he cannot afford the bail. She in turn told him that although it was only $400, it was a serious offence. The case was put off to April 11.
