[www.inewsguyana.com] – A man who fired shots at several police ranks while they attempted to arrest him while responding to reports of an attempted robbery on Wednesday made his first Court appearance before Magistrate Ann McLennan to answer to the offence.

It is alleged that the accused, 37 year-old Shawn Thom of Georgetown on Wednesday October 07, at Kitty Georgetown, with intent to maim, disfigure and disable, he dislodged a loaded firearm towards Police Officer Prem Narine.

Thom who was later found with a .32 pistol and three rounds .32 ammunition while he was not the holder of a firearm license pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The Prosecution explained that Narine, on the day in question, was off-duty escorting his family from an International Airport to his home in Kitty.

They explained that Narine observed the defendant’s car trailing him and called other ranks for back-up who then devised a stake-out at the home of Narine.

The Prosecution further described that upon reaching his home, Narine saw the defendant in his car at a dark corner waiting.

When police ventured towards the defendant’s car, he fired shots at them.

Unfortunately for Thom, he was seriously injured after the police fired back shots at him; hitting him at both, his right leg and torso.

Thom, who told the Magistrate that today is his birthday asked for the opportunity to have his injured leg and wounds be cleaned everyday, since that was ordered by his Doctor.

Nonetheless, Thom was eventually remanded to prison.

However he was granted his request to have medical treatment by his Doctor.

He will make his next court appearance on October 28 for report.
