Chinese national dies in pit collapse at CJIA; another injured

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Officials say a Chinese National has died and another injured after a humus pit collapsed on them at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).

According to a statement from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, at approximately 10:40 hrs on Thursday September 17, the two Chinese nationals were working at the CJIA expansion site when a humus pit collapsed, trapping them.

The men have been identified as Engineers Zhang Yixun and Liu Li of China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).

According to the statement, rescue efforts were mounted immediately after the mishap and Li and Yixun were pulled from the debris.

“Unfortunately, Mr. Li died while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Mr. Yixun, understandably traumatized, is now a patient of the said institution,” the release stated.    

Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson has asked that an investigation be launched into the incident immediately. It was noted too that CHEC is responsible for the health and safety of its employees on the work site.
