[www.inewsguyana.com] – A Berbice businesswoman, busted with a quantity of cocaine and marijuana, was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Thursday, April 23.

Donna Charles, 61, is accused of being in possession of 585 grammes of marijuana on April 22 at Lot 02 Wapping Lane, New Amsterdam, Berbice, for the purpose of trafficking. She denied the charge when it was read to her.

The businesswoman further denied that on the same day, she also had in her possession 1.2 grammes of cocaine, for the purpose of trafficking.

The court heard that ranks, acting on information, went to the home of Charles, where a search was conducted. The cocaine was reportedly found in a sheet in the living room while the marijuana was stashed in the microwave in the kitchen, already parceled in small Ziploc bags.

However, the court heard a contradicting story by her Lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat. He indicated that two men who were chased by the police ran into his client’s shop and threw the narcotics on the table.

Bail was objected to by the prosecution, since no special reasons were given by defence. The matter was transferred to the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court for April 27.
