Alleged car thief remanded to prison

court[www.inewsguyana.com] – Hire car driver, Kurtland Scott of Friendship, East Coast Demerara was remanded to prison on a simple larceny charge.

The 23 – year – old defendant appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry and pleaded not guilty to the offence, which alleged that on June 11, he along with two others stole motor car PPP 5786, property of Iverley Allicock.

Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, said on the day in question the victim parked his car and retired to bed. The following morning, he woke up and discovered his car missing.

Scott was arrested following investigations and allegedly admitted to the offence in a confession statement, the Court heard.

According to the Prosecutor, the defendant was arrested in Berbice for a similar offence and since the commission of this offence, he has been evading the police.

Scott was represented by Attorney, Omeyana Hamilton. She said her client was arrested by the Police while tending to another matter. She argued that due to the defendant’s job, he has to move from one place to another.

She told the Court that her client’s confession statement was not given voluntarily. However, bail was refuse and the matter was put off to July 4.
