[www.inewsguyana.com] – A mother and her son appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged with drug trafficking offences.
Sixty – nine – year old Minelva Devonshire and Telbert Devonshire both of Lot 13 Hibiscus Housing Scheme, Blankenburg, are accused of having in their possession 115 grammes of marijuana at their home on June 9.
Mineliva pleaded not guilty to the charge while her son pleaded guilty. Telbert, a Miner, was also charged with the possession of 524 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, to which he pleaded guilty.
The duo was represented by Attorney-at-law, Charles Ramson Jr, who told the Court that Telbert has no pending matter and did not waste the court’s time. The Miner was then sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $30,000 for each charge.
Meanwhile, the charge against Mineliva was withdrawn by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru told the court that based on instructions, the Prosecution will not be giving any evidence against the elderly woman.
iNews had earlier reported that police swooped down at the house and caught the pensioner attempting to hide the marijuana, while her son escaped through a window, discarding the illegal substance in the process.
Telbert was subsequently apprehended and accepted ownership of the drugs, informing the police that he is responsible for selling the marijuana and not his mother.
