Vendor caught with cocaine at Ogle Airport remanded to prison

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Shantell Mansfield, a 32 – year-old vendor of Laing Avenue, Georgetown, charged with drug trafficking narcotics was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Monday, February 10.

DSC06157She pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on Friday, February 7 at Ogle International Airport, East Cost Demerara; she had 517 grammes of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Police Prosecutor, Michael Grant said the woman was an outgoing passenger to Barbados, when a search was carried out on her luggage at the airport.

During checks, the police observed an unusual object on the scanner and a further searched revealed the illegal substance.The Prosecutor objected to the pretrial liberty of the defendant, citing the prevalence and gravity of the offence.

Bail was refused and the matter was transferred to SparendaamMagistrate’s Court for February 17.The woman was charged a year ago with a similar crime and the matter was dismissed.
