Update: Body of drown Sophia teen missing, father joins search party

[www.inewsguyana.com] –The body of 18 – year old Hassani David of Sophia who lost his life on Sunday night (February 16) remains missing.

The teen’s father has since travelled to the area to join a search party that is currently looking for the teen’s body.

David, who was an Excavator Operator working in Puruni,Cuyuni-Mazaruni, Region Seven, drown after a boat he was travelling in capsized.

According to his mother, Natasha David who spoke with iNews on Tuesday morning (February 18), her son could not swim. She said her son was the only one among several others in the boat that died.

David told iNews that her son was a first timer to the interior. He left Georgetown in December 2013 to work with a man who was well known to the family as an Excavator Operator.

“He would always tell me; mommy I need to go and work and I would tell him; you would work in town, but he didn’t want to work here, he always say he want to operate the excavator,” the woman said through tears.

She said she secured several jobs for him after he graduated from the Campbellville Secondary School last year all of which he refused, insisting that he wanted to be an Operator.

David said her son had even applied to the Guyana Police Force. “He come home and said he didn’t want the job anymore because it can’t pay him, his scout teacher always encourage him to join the Force.”

“I told his father to let him go before he turns to crime… he was a quiet person, always willing… he called me in January and said he was coming out in April to buy his own vehicle, buy his land and build a house,” she said.

The woman added, “I can’t explain how I feel, last night all night I cry, I go in my son room and he is no more.”

David’s 13 – year – old brother was also very distraught on learning of the news.
