Police, gunmen trade bullets; 3 arrested for New Amsterdam robbery

police[www.inewsguyana.com] – After coming under fire, the police in Berbice managed to capture three men in connection with the robbery of a store in New Amsterdam on Thursday night.

According to a police report, at about 19:00 on July 16, two men armed with handguns entered the business place of M. Ally and Sons on Main Street, New Amsterdam, while two others remained outside.

The two men held up Nazmoon Ally, aged 64 and a salesgirl in the Supermarket and took away a licensed 9mm. pistol, $350, 000 and a number of phone cards.

As the two men were leaving, one of them discharged a round in the direction of the salesgirl which hit his accomplice instead, but the four men managed to escape.

The police responded promptly to the report and acting on information received went to the New Amsterdam car park at Strand Road were four men who were in a motor vehicle scattered upon seeing the police. The ranks however managed to arrest one of them.

The police subsequently arrested another suspect at Strand Road and King Street, New Amsterdam, in whose possession was found an unlicensed .38 revolver along with 10 matching rounds.

A patrol later confronted two men along Republic Avenue, New Amsterdam, during which there was an exchange of gunfire, but the men managed to escape. Further investigations led to the arrest of a man at Stanleytown, New Amsterdam. The three men are in police custody, assisting with the investigations.
