Miners accused of stealing raw Gold granted $300,000 bail

IMG_20140527_145208[www.inewsguyana.com] – Two miners accused of stealing two ounces of raw gold were placed on $300,000 bail each by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Wesley Morrison, 42 of Belfield Housing Scheme and Royston Herod of Two Friends Village, East Coast of Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that between April 28 and May 2 at Arampa, Backdam, Cuyuni River they stole the raw gold valued $420,000, property of Ivan Weight.

Police Prosecutor, Bharat Mangru objected to the pretrial liberty of both defendants on the grounds that they may pose as flight risk, since there are likely to be charged with other offences.

Mangru said after the commission of the crime, Morrison fled the area but was later apprehended during a sting area.

The duo was represented by Attorney – at – Law, Rexford Jackson, who requested that both his clients be granted bail.

The lawyer said that Morrison was employed by virtual complainant (VC) for about fourteen years and is a father of four.

Jackson said the other defendant is also employed by Weight for a considerable time and never encountered any such allegation.

They were ordered to lodge their passports and report to the Police until the completion of their trial. The case was transferred to Bartica Court on June 12.
