[www.inewsguyana.com] – Abna Garner, a 27 – year – old maintenance worker of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara was fined $10,000 yesterday (January 02) by Magistrate Annette Singh on an assault charge.

Garner pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 he assaulted his 20-year-old reputed wife.

Police Prosecutor, Kerry Boswick told the Court that the two have been in a common – law relationship for the past three years and they share a one – year old – daughter. He said that on the day in question, Garner returned home intoxicated and the couple had a misunderstanding because the woman refused to have sexual intercourse with him.

The Prosecutor added that as a result Garner became annoyed and dealt the woman several slaps and hit her with a Pressure Cooker.

Boswick said in self-defence, the woman armed herself with a hand saw and hit Garner which resulted in injuries. Both parties sought medical attention and were later arrested and charged.

The Prosecutor recommended counseling for the couple. In Court, the man apologized. “I’m sorry for everything that happened…I’d like to move forward and look after our kid as the New Year start.”

The woman, who was charged with assaulting him, accepted the apology. She too had pleaded guilty and was ordered to post $5,000 fine.

They were both placed on peace bonds and ordered to report to Help and Shelter for counseling.
