Drugs found on-board foreign ship in Demerara River

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) and the Customs Container Control Unit last evening (Monday, January 5), made a major drug bust on-board a vessel in the Demerara River, Head of CANU James Singh has confirmed.

The drugs were found in a container on board the vessel that had last docked in neighboring Suriname and arrived in Guyana at the weekend.

It was destined for Europe.

The container was taken off the vessel and transported to the city, Georgetown over the course of the night and will be opened sometime this morning where the drugs will be quantified.

The crew of some eight or nine persons has been arrested and is in police custody. Their nationalities are not known.
