BV man remanded on robbery charge

[www.inewsguyana.com] – A Mason of Canterbury Walk, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara was on Wednesday (January 8) remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a robbery offence.

Wendell Austin, 20, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on Saturday, January 4 at Longden Street, Georgetown he being in company of others and armed with a knife robbed Kishan Persaud of one Toshiba laptop computer, one blackberry bold cellular phone, one silver band and ring and $15,000 cash together valued at $216,000.

Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the Court that on the day in question around 12:30hrs the victim was walking along Longden Street heading to the Timehri Mini-bus Park, when the defendant in company of another male placed a knife to his neck and relieved him of the articles mentioned in the charge.

The matter was reported and the defendant was positively identified by the Virtual Complainant (VC) in an ID parade.
The Chief Magistrate asked Austin if he has any pending matter or prior conviction and he replied “a pending assault matter in another court.”

The prosecutor successfully opposed bail citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence, and the case was postponed for January 24.
