Businessman busted with 403 grams of marijuana, remanded to prison

A businessman appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry charged with Possession of Narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Thirty – Eight – year old Jacoma Webb of Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden pleaded not guilty to the offence which stated that on July 5 at Amelia’s Ward Linden, he had 403 grams of Cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

According to the police prosecutor Vernette Pindar on July 5 at about 17:20 hours police conducted a search on motor car PPP 4088 which was driven by Asthon Fraser and the accused was a passenger.

On that car, a freezer belonging to the accused was strapped unto the vehicle which was heading into the interior.

The vehicle was stopped by the police and was instructed to head to the Police Station. Upon checking the freezer at the Station, ranks found a parcel containing leave seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.

The items were weighed and amounted to 403 grams. According to the police prosecutor, the accused was told about the offence committed and he denied that he had the illegal item on his possession.

Attorney – at – law Latchmi Rahamat represented the accused and told the court that her client has no knowledge of what the freezer contained since it was given to the driver of the car Asthon Fraser to be taken into the interior the previous day and that the freezer was in the driver’s possession and not her client.

The Attorney also told the court that her client has one pending matter in court of a similar nature. Magistrate refused bail and Jacoma Webb is to make his next court appearance on July 16. [Royan Abrams]
