Another mining pit caves in; 38-Y-0 miner dies

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Thirty – eight – year old Omet Samuels of Queenstown, Essequibo Coast is now dead after he was trapped under rubble from a mining pit which caved in.

According to a police report, at approximately 11:45 hrs on Wednesday, August 05, the mining pit caved in at Toroparu Backdam, Cuyuni River, which resulted in the death of Samuels who was trapped beneath.

The police are continuing their investigations into the accident. There have been numerous deaths reported in the interior due to the collapse of mining pits.

In May, 64 – year – old Thomas Anton, of Kamarang, dies at Quimenang River, Upper Mazaruni while he was operating a mining equipment underwater.

It is suspected that he drowned after being trapped under a quantity of loose earth. Only recently ten miners died and seven were injured after a mining pit caved in at Kowasi Backdam.

  1. Where are the inspectors or safety experts obviously these owners are not been monitored prior to or during the digging of these pits. If there are not enought of these personnel on the ground hire and train ASAP. Sympathy to the family.
