[www.inewsguyana.com] – Officials from the Ministry of Education Schools Welfare Department, the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security and the Guyana Police Force found a total of 48 children in ‘E’ Field South Sophia  on Thursday, March 6 that were not attending School.

The children were found when the joint team visited the area, investigating the absence of school-aged children from school.

During visits to the homes of some of the children, parents and guardians were told about their responsibility to ensure that their children receive an education.

It was noted that more males were absent and that there seemed to be a significant number of secondary school aged children who were either at home or playing with friends at the time officers visited the area.

“This is the first of many campaigns slated for 2014 as the ministry intends to intensify efforts to reduce nonattendance. The ministry will continue to collaborate with all the relevant stakeholders and endeavors to have monthly truancy campaigns” a release noted.
