4 years jail for female found guilty of cocaine possession

[www.inewsguyana.com] – A labourer of Lot 68, Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, has been sentenced to four years imprisonment by Magistrate Faith McGusty for the illegal possession of cocaine.

Fifty – four – year Avril Lavern Crowter was found guilty on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 for the offense, which detailed that on July 29, 2015 at Cross and Leopold Streets, Georgetown, she had in her possession 17 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Crowter made her first appearance before Magistrate Ann McLennan and was remanded to prison pending the trial, which was conducted before Magistrate McGusty.

According to the prosecution, on the day in question, the police acted on information and visited the house on Leopold Street, where they identified themselves as police officers.

The ranks saw the defendant and approached her, after observing she was acting in a suspicious manner. The court heard that she was found holding a plastic bag, which contained the illegal substance.

However, Crowter told the court that on the said day, the police arrived, tied her up, placed her into their vehicle and took her to the station.

Crowter alleged that the ranks beat her and tied her up, causing her blue underwear to come off and her private parts to be exposed to eight men.
