[www.inewsguyana.com] – Safraz Haniff was yesterday fined $25,000 by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for stealing liquor from Bounty Supermarket.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on October 21 at Bounty Supermarket, Water Street, Georgetown, he stole two bottles of Magnum Tonic Wine and three bottles of Degards wine, valued $3,010.

Haniff explained to the Court that he was shopping with someone who was purchasing the items, but could not locate the individual when it was time to pay; as such, he stepped outside when he was held by the security guards for shoplifting.

Based on his explanation to the Court, the Magistrate convicted him for the offence. Failure to pay the fine will default two weeks imprisonment.

The Prosecution’s facts stated that the security guard saw when Haniff took the articles and hid them under his shirt.
