[www.inewsguyana.com] – An 18 year-old man from Georgetown, accused of larceny from person and escaping from lawful custody was on Wednesday placed on $150,000 bail after he made his first court appearance before Magistrate Fabayo Azore to answer to the offences.

It is alleged that Shakeel Wilburg on July 29, 2015 between Durban and Smith Streets, Georgetown stole from Nikita Damond one Gold Chain the value of $90,000 GC.

It is also alleged, that the accused on August 8, 2015 at Brickdam Police Station while a pending investigation of larceny against him was ongoing, he escaped from lawful custody.

Wilburg pleaded not guilty to both Offences.

The Prosecution objected to bail, due to the gravity and nature of the offences. They explained, that Wilburg should be denied bail since he might not attend his trial.

Wilburg has a similar matter of larceny from person pending at the Ruimveldt Police Station for which investigations are still ongoing.

In addition to that, the Prosecution further explained that the accused while in police custody at the Brickdam Police Station, picked his handcuff and escaped.

However, Wilburg who boldly denied stealing the gold necklace claimed it was his cousin who robbed Damond.

As for the allegation of escaping from policecustody; he told the court he was offered the key by a police officer to unlock himself.

Wilburg was eventually granted bail in the sum of $150,000 and is expected to re-appear in court on October 9.
