High Commission of Canada says elections were free and fair

Charity[www.inewsguyana.com] – The High Commission of Canada in Guyana has described Monday’s elections as “smooth, credible, free and fair.”

A media release from the Commission one day after the May 11 regional and general elections stated that “it is important to remember that the only official results are those that are tabulated and issued by the designated, official elections body – GECOM.”

The Commission also reminded that several weeks ago political parties signed the Code of Conduct in an expression of their commitment to a peaceful election process and acceptance of results.

“I hope that all political parties continue to remind their supporters of their commitment to respect the democratic process and accept the official GECOM results.”

The High Commission says the enthusiasm displayed by voters to participate in Guyana’s electoral process and to have their voice heard by casting their ballots is commendable.

“I urge all Guyanese and stakeholders to practice patience and to allow GECOM to now do their work to deliver the official results…I congratulate the Chairman, Dr. Steve Surujbally, the Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield, the Commissioners and all GECOM staff and officials for the successful culmination of many months of hard work and planning,” the statement noted.
