kb[www.inewsguyana.com] – Twelve (12) Corneal Transplants were done at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) at the weekend from 9th to 11th October 2015.

The Department of Ophthalmology hosted the Subraj Foundation Transplantation Team. The team was at the hospital in July 2015 where they completed 11 transplants over 3 days.

According to a GPHC release, “The team headed by Dr. Rahul Jindal has been previously coming to Guyana with a record of already performing 26 kidney transplant in Guyana. The team from the USA comprised two Corneal Transplant Surgeons – Dr. Stephen Waller and Dr. Joseph Pasternak.”

It was noted that the team “worked tirelessly over the weekend along with the ophthalmology theatre nurses and Dr. Shailendra Sugrim, Head of Department of Ophthalmology to complete the feat. Dr. Pasternak the principal surgeon had been diligently training Dr. Sugrim to perform these surgeries over the past two visits. This resulted in Dr. Sugrim now being the first Guyanese Ophthalmic Surgeon to have completed a corneal transplant in Guyana. He is now capable of performing these surgeries on his own at the GPHC.”
