Slingerz stun Santos for Banks KO Cup

[www.inewsguyana.com]Slingerz Football Club has taken top honors in this year’s Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Knock Out (KO) tournament following  a 3-2 win on Monday evening (January 1) at the National Stadium, Providence.

The feature event which pitted the duo together was a ‘see saw affair’, leaving fans gripping the end of their chairs with Slingerz Devon Millington firing home in the 11th minute of play.

That goal would not go answered as Santos’s Christoff Wensly in the15th minute equalized the encounter, giving fans what they wanted – an evenly matched encounter.

As the first half ended, the score line remained unchanged until the West Demerara side surged ahead on the boot of Golden Jaguars player Vurlon Mills fired in 61st Minute.

The match wasn’t over, as Wensly again answered the call for another goal and once more hauled the Santos unit back into the game and the fans out of their seats.

Wensly would be hero but his celebrations were short-lived as no nonsense Slingerz skipper Millington sealed the deal just before the whistle went.

In the evenings other encounter BK Western Tigers earned themselves a consolation victory as they defeated the Guyana Defense Force 2-1 to claim third place in the tournament.

This year’s tournament saw 32 teams doing battle for a the $4 million and bragging rights first place that will be held for the first time by Slingerz, while the runner-up Santos, third placed BK’s Western Tigers and fourth placed GDF will collect $2.5 million, $1.5 million and $1 million respectively.
