[www.inewsguyana.com] – As the Opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) gets set to take up its seat in the National Assembly later today, it has not decided as to whether it will nominate one of its members to be Deputy Speaker.

General Secretary, Clement Rohee told reporters during a press conference at Freedom House on Monday, August 17 that the issue of choosing a Deputy Speaker is a “strategic” one that has to do “with parliamentary tactics, which you will see unfolding later on.”

The PPP has refused to take up its seat in Parliament since its opening on June 10, forcing the government to postpone the selection of a Deputy Speaker in all seven sittings.

There were reports that former Attorney General, Anil Nandlall would take up the post, but Rohee denied this. When asked who will be the PPP nominee for the position, he said, “We don’t have nobody…We haven’t made any decision about accepting that position…it is a question of how we tactically utilize our resources in Parliament in order to ensure that we are not shortchanged.”

When asked again if it will be Nandlall, he reiterated, “It’s not going to be anyone at this point in time.”

Meanwhile, the General Secretary made it clear that the PPP is ready for the budget debates, which are expected to commence today.

“We going in this debate firing on all cylinders…we are well prepared having respect to the fact that we have 23 years of government behind us…we are also acquainted with the issues and even though some comrades who were Ministers in the previous government will not be returning, this does not mean that we’re handicapped because we’re able to distribute responsibilities of those sectors to other comrades who are quite competent in those areas,” Rohee told the news conference.

He said the Guyanese populace can expect a very robust and active Opposition.

“We’re going in there combative, we’re going in there well informed, we’re going in there to contribute as constructively as we can. With 23 years of government behind us, I believe that citizens and Guyanese can look forward to very robust debates in the National Assembly from our side.”

Rohee further noted that the PPP will be using its “data and facts” to expose the fallacies of the APNU+AFC government.
