Man who escaped lawful custody sentenced to 2 years imprisonment

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Jermaine Joel was sentenced two years imprisonment for escaping from lawful custody by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond on Monday, March 3.

He pleaded guilty to the offence which alleged that on February 28 at South Road, in the vicinity of the High Court and being in the lawful custody of Corporal James Garnette, he escaped.

Police Prosecutor Renetta Betham told the Court that on February 28 around 08:55hrs the defendant was being escorted by Corporal Garnette for the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 10 for the offence of deposited waste.  

She said he kick off his slipper in the vicinity of the High Court and ran East of South Road, towards North in King Street. Corporal Garnette gave chase but the accused made good his escape.

The Prosecutor added that On Sunday, March 2 the escaped prisoner was seen by Corporal Garnette on Cummings Street and was arrested.

Joel apologized for the offence and informed the court that he was previously sentenced to six months for a simple larceny offence.  

Joel was fined $15,000 with an alternative of 20 days imprisonment for deposited waste.
