[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) and Licensed Gold Dealers were today encouraged to support the Government’s effort to increase gold declaration.

A meeting was held at the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment with Minister Robert Persaud, Chairman of the Guyana Gold Board, Dr. Gobind Ganga and President and Executives of the GGDMA and Private Dealers; where measures were discussed and agreed upon to improve the level of gold declaration.

The Guyana Gold Board data indicates that declaration is below that recorded level for the corresponding period for 2013.

Some of the measures to be pursued immediately include:

1.     Public sensitization

2.     Proactive monitoring and enforcement drive by the Guyana Gold Board regarding undeclared gold transactions

3.     Enhance inter-agency coordination including Law enforcement agencies and the Guyana Revenue Authority

4.     Stringent enforcement of reporting obligations by miners to be carried by the GGMC.

5.     Crackdown of illegal gold trading entities across the country with the assistance of the Guyana Police Force.

Hence, the GGDMA and the gold dealers at today’s meeting have given their support for efforts to aid the full declaration.

Stakeholders pledge their support for these measures. The Minister emphasized that the Government of Guyana remains uncompromising in its efforts to ensure full compliance with the Laws to deal with these issue of undeclared gold and reports of smuggling.
