Farmer committed to stand trial in High Court for manslaughter

Jamal Bacchus of lot 17 Caledonia, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was on Friday committed to stand trial at the High Court on a manslaughter charge. The 48-year-old was initially brought to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on a murder charge which he denied.

The charge alleged that on February 4, at Access Road, Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, EBD, he murdered Dhanshana Ram. Later on into the Preliminary Inquiry, the charge was reduced to manslaughter.

Police Prosecutor Michael Grant did not reveal the prosecution’s facts.

According to reports, on the day in question at about 01:15h, Ram sustained stab wounds about his body during an argument with another man at Timehri. He was subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Bacchus was arrested and an investigation was launched which led to the charge being instituted against him.

The accused was represented by Attorney Nigel Hughes. The matter was adjourned to February 26.
