earthquake1[www.inewsguyana.com] – Residents in Barbados this morning reported feeling the tremors from a 5.3 magnitude earthquake that struck about off the island.

People living in nearby St Vincent and the Grenadines as well as Martinique also indicated they felt the tremor. There were no reports of damage, however.

It should be noted that the tremor was also felt in Guyana and St. Lucia.

Initial information from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the UWI Seismic Research Centre (SRC) was that the quake occurred around 7:01 a.m. at a depth of between 10 and 15 km. The USGS put the depth at 10 km and while the SRC estimated it at 15.7 km. However, both made it clear the information was only preliminary.

The quake occurred about 125 km northeast of Barbados’ capital, Bridgetown; 240 km east of Castries, St. Lucia; and 262 km east southeast of Fort-de-France, Martinique. [Extracted and modified from Caribbean 360]
