Berbice pandit beaten to death by drunken men

A 60-year-old pandit, Rishi Bharrat, was Saturday night beaten to death by a group of men consuming alcohol in front of his lot 10 Grant 106 Crabwood Creek, Berbice property.

The incident occurred sometime around 02:15 hours when Bharrat confront the drunken men to remove from in front his premises. So far, 11 persons have been arrested for the murder.

Police say the group of men were imbibing and using foul language in front of the now dead man’s property.

As such, Bharrat went out to the men with a piece of wood and told them to remove from the area.

However, the men then became annoyed and armed themselves, and begun hitting the 60-year-old religious leader several times about his body which cause him to fall to the street.

He was picked up by his relatives in an unconscious state and rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival (DOA).

The suspects were apprehended and placed in custody.

The investigation is in progress.

Meanwhile, Senior ranks in the Division – Superintendent H. Sawh, Deputy Superintendent Hunte, Asst. Superintendent Bacon and others – visited the grieving family of Bharrat this morning to extend condolences on behalf of the Guyana Police Force.

Additionally, the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha has also expressed sadness over the “horrific” killing of the religious leader.

“We condemn this savage and heinous beating of the Pandit to death and ask that the perpetrators of this brutal act face the full force of the law,” the religious body said in a Facebook post.
