A woman was today remanded to prison by Magistrate Fabayo Azore, following a charge of assault and trafficking in person.

Ann Maria Carter of First Avenue, Bartica pleaded not guilty to both offences. It is alleged that between March 14 and April 1 at Tiger Creek Rupununi, she unlawfully assaulted 17 – year – old Natasha Persaud, causing actual bodily harm.

According to Police Prosecutor, Seon Blackman, on the day in question the defendant transported, and harboured Persaud for sexual purposes. The Prosecutor said that the accused assaulted the virtual complainant by cuffing her several times to the face and head.

Based on the nature of offence, the penalty it attracts and the fact that the defendant has a pending matter of similar nature in the Bartica Magistrate’s court, the prosecutor objected to bail.

Carter was remanded to prison until September 18.
