[www.inewsguyana.com] – Charge d’Affaires of the United States Embassy Bryan Hunt says the United States is pleased with the level of preparation by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) ahead of the General and Regional Elections to be held on Monday, May 11.

“From the prospective of the United States Government, the Guyana Elections Commission has done an excellent job in putting together the necessary logistical preparations” Hunt explained.

He was at the time speaking at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown where he and other United States Embassy Officials escorted Former United States President Jimmy Carter who arrived in Guyana to observe the elections.

Hunt said that he has had the opportunity on numerous occasions to the meet with the Chairman, Chief Elections Officer and Commissioners of GECOM on the work they have been doing ahead of elections.

“From the United States side we think that the Commission is very capable of running a very credible poll on the day and confident that the results would be a fair reflection of the will of the Guyanese People,” Hunt further stated.

On the issue of the presence of the Former United States President, Hunt said that Carter is here on a private mission with the Carter Centre and it signals that all the political parties want to ensure that there is broad international observation of the polls and they are pleased that the Carter centre along with the OAS, Commonwealth, CARICOM and UNSUR will be in the field on the day and would increase the credibility of the polls for the Guyanese People.
