US appeals court maintains block on Trump travel ban

A US federal appeals court on Thursday dealt a fresh blow to President Donald Trump’s controversial travel ban, upholding a lower court’s decision to block the measure, which targeted travellers from six Muslim majority countries, according to an  AFP report.

The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals said it “remained unconvinced” that the part of the measure naming the specific countries – Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – had “more to do with national security than it does with effectuating the president’s promised Muslim ban.”

The court further said it could not say that the government’s security concerns outweighed the plaintiffs’ concerns about discrimination, according to the AFP report.
