Sugar workers at Uitvlugt estate are on a strike, hoping to have their concerns addressed. The number two gang which is the cane planting gang is protesting what they call managerial inefficiency and which they claimed have been ongoing for a number of years.

According to the workers, they have to do extra work such as clearing brushes and overgrown vegetation from the fields before replanting the sugar canes.

They are claiming that the extra workload puts pressure on the workers but with no additional remuneration. The striking workers say they earn a minimum wage for the job.

The workers are calling on the relevant authorities to look into the matter. They related that the supervisor is making their work difficult adding that this was not the tradition and should be removed from the estate. The strike they say will last until the problem is resolved. [Nickhail Jaundoo]
