The University of Guyana (U.G.) has amended its General Entry requirements to study at the tertiary academic institution.

In a statement today, UG said its Academic Board, at a Special Meeting held late last year, has unanimously approved that the number of sittings as a requirement for admission to the university be removed from the institution’s general entry requirement.

The previous general entry requirement was five CSEC subjects at one sitting or a minimum of six subjects at no more than two sittings.

The amended University of Guyana General Entry Requirement is now:  A minimum of five CXC/CSEC General Proficiency (Grades I & II; and III from 1998) /five passes at GCE ‘O’ Level, including English Language, the subject(s) required for the pursuit of the major, where applicable, and Mathematics for designated programmes.

This decision takes effect from Semester II, 2015-2016.

According to Registrar of the University of Guyana, Dr Nigel Gravesande, access to tertiary education must always be seen as a fundamental right and not a privilege.

“It is in this context that the recent changes in the University’s matriculation entry requirements must be lauded as it presents opportunities for greater access to programmes being delivered by the University,” he said.

Meanwhile, online application is now available for the second semester which commences on January 25, 2016. Prospective students are invited to visit the university website at www.uog.edu.gy to view the available programmes.

  1. Special Needs Courses At UG Are Required:

There are thousands of employed and formerly employed persons with years of employment history, related to their interests and academic choices.

Could there be some Special Needs Programs that caters to this population, as another addition to the University of Guyana’s Curriculum?

Former Overseas Based Guyanese with American GED High School Diplomas, and other academic qualifications should also be considered as relevant qualifications, for entry into the University of Guyana.

  2. By diluting the entry requirements you are lowering the intake quality and as they say in computer language ” garbage in, garbage out”. £

  3. Where gravesande got his phd from. His statement is rife with clowish sentiment.
Every one who enters s university must do so on merits of academic standing.
This lowering of standards will only cower the ratings of the already underated UG.
What is the UG administration doing to ensure that the UG medical programme is accredited. We have the best programme in the Caribbean and we lost accreditation because some clowns in freedom house wanted the university close so that another medical school that raj singh registered would have risen as the university of choice.
The granger administration is doing nothing to ensure that this accreditation is restored urgently. Instead we lowering the entry requirments so that we will confer that only stupidy ppl coming out with degrees.
UG medical students shoudl protest until this is made right. GRAVESANDE lets hear you on this.
APNU AFC lets here you out. We listening

  4. Congratulations! the next step should be to review the entrance qualification for pre-university studies for persons who are 30+ with years of experience.
