Three men were taken into police custody after a boat was intercepted with a large quantity of marijuana along the Upper Berbice River in the vicinity of the Aroaima Village, on Sunday.

Based on reports received, police ranks were on patrol when they observed a wooden boat being propelled by a 15 HP outboard engine with three occupants.

However, upon noticing the police, one of the occupants identified as Lamount Leacock called ‘Farri’, 29, of Kwakwani Waterfront, Upper Berbice River reportedly jumped overboard with a grey tarpaulin and a bulky salt bag.

The ranks managed to intercept Leacock and a search was conducted on the bag during which two large parcels wrapped with black plastic and transparent scotch tape were found.

Further checks unearthed a quantity of cannabis and as such, Leacock was told of the offence, cautioned and arrested.

The other two occupants of the boat- Lyndon McPherson, 34, a security guard and owner of the boat of Kwakwani Waterfront and Sheldon Sooklall, 24, a mason of Kwakwani Park, Upper Berbice River were searched but nothing suspicious was found.

They both denied any knowledge of the drugs being found in the bag. Moreover, they claimed that Leacock was taking a drop with them.

The three men were escorted to the Kwakwani Police Station where the illegal substance was weighed in their presence and amounted to 5.68 kilogram.

Investigations are ongoing.
