[www.inewsguyana.com] – A 21-year- old hotel receptionist, who confessed to attempting to smuggle cocaine to Barbados, was today (January 12), sentenced to three years imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine – Beharry.

Althea Candace Timmerman was also ordered to post a $30,000 fine. She pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that on Saturday January 10, at the Ogle International Airport she had 1.134 kilograms of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Oswald Messiah told the Court that Timmerman hails from Bartica but lives at 1255 Cane View Avenue, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

He said one day while she was at Demico House, she got acquainted with a male and later developed a relationship with him. He described the man as a mystery since the Unit has no address for him.

According to Massiah, the man later asked her if she would be willing to transport the drugs to Barbados and she consented.

On January 9, the Prosecutor said that the man met her and gave her a suitcase. Massiah told the Court that although the drug was hidden in the false bottom and she had not seen it, Timmerman knew that it was there.

Massiah explained that the 21-year-old placed her personal belongings in the suitcase and the next day she ventured to the airport with intentions of boarding a flight to Barbados.

The Prosecutor related that as Timmerman’s suitcase was passing through the scanner, when a CANU officer noticed something was amiss and decided to check. It was then that he found the substance concealed in the false bottom of the suitcase.

She was arrested and charged.

During mitigation, the 21-year-old told the Chief Magistrate that she is a mother of one and had decided to participate in the drug trade because of her five-year-old daughter. Timmerman added that this was her first offence and asked the court to be merciful.

Additionally, the Prosecutor reported that she had been cooperating with them. She was thereafter given the minimum imposable sentence
