A teenager is presently being interrogated regarding the murder of a 37-year-old taxi driver which occurred just after midday, Wednesday, on the Skeldon Linepath, Berbice.
Dead is father of two, Deonarine Laljit also known as “Baba” of No.72 Village, Berbice.
Reports received indicate that at around 13:00hrs, the taxi driver picked up a 15-year-old male who resides in the No.59 Village.
As they were proceeding along the route and approached No.69 Village, Berbice, Laljit and the teen were reportedly involved in a heated argument. After some minutes, the irate teenager reportedly whipped out a knife and stabbed Laljit to his left side neck and face.
The 15-year-old then opened the car door and fled the scene.
Shortly after, Laljit exited the vehicle, bleeding profusely from his wounds, and ran some 20 feet away before he collapsed.
Public spirited persons rushed the unconscious man to the Skeldon Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police were contacted and information received led them to the teen who was hiding in an abandoned house in the vicinity of Linepath. The bloody weapon was reportedly retrieved from the teen’s possession.
He was taken into police custody as investigations continue.(Ramona Luthi)
