Suspect in murder of TSU rank remanded to prison, claims he was tortured by police

DSC05241 [www.inewsguyana.com] – A man was today (September 27) remanded to prison for the murder of Tactical Services Unit (TSU) rank Michael Cumberbatch when he appeared before Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty in the Georgetown Magistrates Court.

Twenty-Eight-Year old Vickram Persaud of La Grange, West Bank Demerara was not required to plea to the charge which read that on September 23 at North Sophia Georgetown he murdered Constable Michael Cumberbatch, aged 29, of 111 North Sophia Squatting Area.

Reports are that on the day of the incident Cumberbatch was at home when he was confronted by Persaud who was reportedly enquiring about someone name Quacy. An argument ensued between the two men during which the TSU rank was shot to his chest. The accused escaped but was later arrested by the police.

Cumberbatch was taken to the Georgetown public hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival (D.O.A).

Persaud who did not have legal representation claimed he was severely beaten and tortured by the police to give a statement.

Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman requested three weeks to prepare his file which was sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice. Persaud has been remanded to prison until October 1
