[www.inewsguyana.com]Unconfirmed reports indicate that six persons including an eighteen month old baby have been rendered homeless after a fire of unknown origin destroyed their home at Plaisance on the Railway Embankment on Thursday night (November 28).

iNews has been able to confirm that at the time of the fire, three persons were at home.

Persons in the area said that the fire might have started due a candle being lit or a stove since the house was not fitted with power from the Guyana Power and Light.

The mother of the eighteen month old baby was not in a condition to speak with the media. The fire started just before 20:00hrs.

One resident told iNews that residents first noticed the fire when it burst through the roof of the home and they immediately raised an alarm, after which they formed a bucket brigade.

However, he explained that the fire became more than they could handle and after it was determined that no one else was in the building, they retreated and await the arrival of the fire service.

The Guyana Fire Service responded with two fire tenders while the police maintained a presence at the location. The house was engulfed in flames even while fire fighters were still battling to control another fire at the factory of Comfort Sleep in Eccles Industrial Site, East Bank Demerara. [Leroy Smith]
