Several persons have been arrested after a West Coast Demerara fisherman was found dead on Monday in the Berbice River.

berbiceInews had previously reported that the body of 49-year-old Shahabudeen Haniff of Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD, was found in the net of a fishing vessel that was working in the vicinity of the Berbice River.

Reports revealed that the Haniff was a member of the crew when they set sail on a fishing boat that left a wharf at New Hope, East Bank Demerara on December 30, 2015. They were heading to the Berbice River area.

Haniff reportedly went missing from the boat and his body was later found by another fishing vessel in the Berbice River.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum has confirmed that four crew members, including the Captain of the vessel, were taken into custody and are assisting with the investigation.
