Religious groups should play a greater role in suicide prevention – iNews Poll

Pie Chart[www.inewsguyana.com] – Seventy nine percent of respondents to a poll conducted by iNews believe that the various religious groups in Guyana can play a greater role in suicide prevention.

Over the past two months, there has been a spate of suicides rocking the country, especially in Essequibo and Berbice communities. However, 20 percent of the iNews’ respondents do not believe that the religious groups can help, while one percent was undecided.

In September, the main opposition – A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) urged the People’s Progressive Party Government to take the lead in tackling the issue.

The APNU had also stated that the administration’s complacency towards suicide contributes to the continuation of the crisis.
