President assents to three Local Gov’t Bills

[www.inewsguyana.com]President Donald Ramotar has assented to three of the four Local Government Bills which were passed in the National Assembly.

Government officials confirmed that the President assented to three of the Bills on Wednesday, November 6. The three Bills include the Fiscal Transfers Bill, Municipal and Districts Councils Amendment Bill, and the Local Government Commission Bill.

However, the President did not give his assent to the Local Government Amendment Bill. Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon told reporters at his post cabinet media briefing that this very Bill attracted a lot of controversy on the floor of the House when it was being debated.

The Bills have been awaiting Presidential assent for three months now. It was unanimously passed in the National Assembly on August 7. It paves the way for the holding of Local Government Elections in Guyana which was last held in 1994.
